Breathing Techniques and the Nervous System: What's Established, What's Promising

Nasal breathing and nostril-specific techniques have real, measured effects on the autonomic nervous system. Here's what's well-supported and what's still speculative for skin specifically.

Why breath is a different kind of lever

Breathing is unusual among autonomic processes: unlike heart rate, digestion, or immune signaling, it's something you can consciously override. That makes it one of the more directly testable tools for someone interested in influencing their own stress response, even where downstream effects on a specific skin condition are still under-studied.

Buteyko: retraining default breathing

The Buteyko method, developed by physician Konstantin Buteyko in the 1950s, is built on the observation that many people chronically over-breathe at rest — breathing faster and deeper than their metabolism requires. Over-breathing lowers carbon dioxide levels, which can paradoxically reduce oxygen delivery to tissues and keep the sympathetic nervous system primed. The core practice is simple: nasal breathing throughout the day, with a slightly reduced volume than feels automatic. The strongest evidence base for Buteyko is in asthma; direct trial evidence for skin conditions is limited, and the rationale for trying it here rests on the same general logic as other nervous-system interventions in this guide — addressing upstream activation rather than a downstream symptom.

Left-nostril breathing

The two nostrils appear to have measurably different effects on the nervous system. EEG research published in Scientific Reports (Niazi et al., 2022) found that right-nostril breathing produced cortical arousal patterns, while left-nostril breathing produced a calmer, more attenuated brain state. A separate small clinical trial found that breathing through the left nostril after exercise accelerated the return of heart rate and blood pressure to baseline. In practice: closing the right nostril and breathing softly through the left for five to ten minutes is a reasonable technique to try during a moment of acute stress — the evidence here concerns general autonomic regulation, not skin outcomes specifically.

Alternate-nostril breathing

Nadi Shodhana, or alternate-nostril breathing, is among the most-studied classical breathing practices. Multiple trials have found regular practice reduces resting heart rate, lowers systolic blood pressure, and improves heart rate variability (Ghiya, International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, 2017, systematic review). As with the other techniques here, this evidence concerns general autonomic and cardiovascular measures rather than seborrheic dermatitis directly.

Safety notes and contraindications

These practices are generally low-risk but not risk-free. Skip alternate-nostril breathing during an active cold or sinus infection, with uncontrolled high blood pressure, during the first trimester of pregnancy, or with a respiratory condition not cleared by your doctor. Mouth-taping at night — sometimes used by Buteyko practitioners to prevent mouth breathing during sleep — should not be attempted if you have nasal obstruction, unevaluated sleep apnea, congestion, or alcohol/sedatives in your system; if you try it at all, use a small breakable strip rather than a full seal, and stop if anything feels wrong.
