You've treated the symptoms. What if you've been missing the cause?

Shampoo. Ketoconazole. Steroid cream. Probiotics. Most people with seborrheic dermatitis have tried all of it and still don't know why it keeps coming back. We review what the research actually says about the skin barrier, the microbiome, and the nervous system — so you can see the whole picture before trying the next thing.

FAQ

Popular Questions

Quick, evidence-based answers to what people ask most.

Is nail biting or skin picking a sign of a character flaw?

No. These are recognized, classified behaviors that develop as tension-regulation strategies, often in childhood. They're worth addressing for their own sake, not treated as a moral failing.

If I stop clenching my jaw, will my skin clear up?

There's no controlled evidence that jaw tension alone drives seborrheic dermatitis, so this shouldn't be treated as a guaranteed fix. It may be a reasonable, low-risk thing to address alongside standard dermatological treatment.

Can breathing exercises replace medical treatment for seborrheic dermatitis?

No. These techniques have reasonable evidence for general stress and autonomic regulation, but they are not a substitute for dermatological treatment. Consider them a possible complement, not a replacement.

Is mouth-taping at night safe?

Not for everyone. It should be avoided with nasal obstruction, unevaluated sleep apnea, congestion, or sedative use, and should only be attempted, if at all, with an easily breakable strip rather than a full seal. Speak with a doctor if you have any respiratory or sleep concerns.

Will taking probiotics clear my seborrheic dermatitis?

There isn't strong seborrheic-dermatitis-specific evidence that probiotics reliably clear the condition. Some general skin-inflammation benefits have been reported for certain strains, but this is not an established treatment for seborrheic dermatitis specifically.

Is seborrheic dermatitis caused by candida in the gut?

No. The organism most closely associated with seborrheic dermatitis, Malassezia, is a different yeast genus that lives on skin, not in the gut.
