Sleep and inflammation
Sleep has some of the clearest general evidence of any lifestyle factor discussed here. Deep sleep supports the body's anti-inflammatory and repair processes, and poor sleep measurably amplifies emotional reactivity: brain-imaging research (Yoo et al., Current Biology, 2007) found the amygdala becomes substantially more reactive to negative stimuli after sleep deprivation. Consistency — a stable bedtime and wake time — appears to matter as much as total sleep duration.
Diet: honest, not restrictive
As covered in our nutrition guide, no single dietary pattern produces consistent improvement across everyone with this condition. Where the broader inflammation literature does converge is on a Mediterranean-style pattern — vegetables, fruit, fatty fish, olive oil, legumes, nuts, whole grains — plus fermented foods, which have more direct evidence for supporting microbiome diversity than most over-the-counter probiotic capsules.
Movement, nature, and cold exposure
Moderate aerobic exercise is associated with a sustained reduction in resting cortisol over weeks of regular practice. Time in natural environments is linked to reductions in cortisol, blood pressure, and inflammatory markers across multiple studies (Twohig-Bennett & Jones, Environmental Research, 2018). Brief cold-water exposure — thirty to sixty seconds at the end of a shower — is associated with vagus nerve activation and a shift toward parasympathetic dominance after the initial spike.
Screens and evening wind-down
The deeper issue with screens before bed may be less about blue light and more about content: news, social media, and email tend to maintain emotional activation at exactly the point the nervous system needs to wind down. Keeping the last 30 minutes before bed screen-free is a low-cost experiment worth running for a few weeks.
