What Causes Seborrheic Dermatitis? Current Scientific Understanding

Seborrheic dermatitis doesn't have one single cause — here's the multifactorial picture researchers currently work from, and the risk factors that raise the odds of a flare.

A multifactorial condition

There is no single identified cause of seborrheic dermatitis. Instead, researchers describe it as arising from the interaction of several factors that, together, tip skin from tolerating its normal microbial residents into an inflammatory response.

The three main ingredients

  • Sebum (skin oil): Seborrheic dermatitis develops almost exclusively in oil-gland-dense areas — scalp, face, chest, upper back — which is why oil production is considered a necessary backdrop for the condition, even though oily skin alone doesn't cause it.

  • Individual immune and barrier response: Most people carry Malassezia without any symptoms. What appears to distinguish people who develop seborrheic dermatitis is how their immune system and skin barrier respond to it — an inflammatory reaction rather than passive tolerance.

What raises the odds of a flare

On top of that baseline mechanism, several factors are associated with higher frequency or severity of flares:

  • Cold, dry weather — flares are widely reported to worsen in winter and improve somewhat in summer.

  • Hormonal shifts — the condition often appears in infancy (linked to maternal hormones) and again after puberty, tracking periods of higher sebaceous gland activity.

  • Family history — a genetic predisposition is suspected, though no single causative gene has been established.

Common myths, addressed

Seborrheic dermatitis is not caused by poor hygiene, and it is not a contagious infection. It's also not the same thing as a systemic "candida" overgrowth — the yeast involved, Malassezia, is a different genus from Candida, and lives on skin rather than in the gut.

What's still being studied

Some proposed contributing factors — including specific dietary patterns, gut microbiome composition, and nervous-system involvement beyond general stress reporting — remain active areas of research rather than settled causes.
